Remanufacturing is the process of disassembly and recovery at the module level and, eventually, at the component level. It requires the repair or replacement of worn out or obsolete components and modules. Parts subject to degradation affecting the performance or the expected life of the whole are replaced: a remanufactured machine should match the same customer expectation as new machines.
The range of products being remanufactured are anywhere from machine tools to office furniture to automotive engines and parts, and even the printer consumables.
Talking about the printer consumables like printer units, toner cartridges, etc, remanufacturing is ecological as well as economical for the manufacturer as well as the consumer.
The consumables industry in India alone is pegged at Rs 5000 crore with big MNCs like LG, Toshiba, Mitsubishi and Canon getting involved in the remanufacturing industry.
Fact is, a single cartridge from a printer takes anywhere from 300 to 1000 years to break down. With the advent of remanufacturing and the ever-evolving technologies coming up regularly, that single cartridge can be 're-manufactured' to a 'like-new' or 'better than new' condition and warranted in performance level and quality.
Such an ecological option can save hundreds of tons of waste, containing non-degradable heavy metals like mercury, lead, and cadmium, from ending up in landfills or dumped in under-developed countries.
Again, fact is, a remanufactured cartridge comes only at a fraction of the price for a new cartridge. With the kind of technological progress made by the remanufacturing industry almost every day, the production costs can be further minimized while still guaranteeing a great product to the consumer, without any compromise on quality and safety of products.
To sustain an economy successfully, we have to turn to reuse, repair and/or recycle mantra. Or you can return completely for remanufacture. It is a complete process, which means it takes more time, money and effort. However, it is the only option that guarantees the quality of the remanufactured products.
